Premier League club Manchester United fell to a shock 2-0 defeat away against newly-promoted Hull City in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, and former goalkeeper David De Gea, now with Fiorentina, appears to have weighed in with a message of support after full-time.

United were beaten by two first-half strikes from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy in East Yorkshire in their first Premier League match of the 2026-27 season on Sunday afternoon.

United had been tipped for a top-four finish by many in the UK before the start of the campaign, but the season has started with disappointment after losing to a side that finished in sixth-place in the second tier last season.

Fiorentina goalkeeper De Gea, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford and was a four-time winner of the club’s player of the year award, took to social media to send a message to his former club after full-time, which read: “It’s not how it starts, it’s how it ends,” reminding supporters that there is still a long way to go before the close of the season.

De Gea will have to wait until Monday evening to get his 2026-27 league campaign underway, as Fiorentina will take on Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in the final fixture of the first round of Serie A fixtures, kicking off at 19.45 BST.

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will also be making his Serie A debut this weekend when Milan take on Torino away from home at 19.45 BST on Sunday evening.
