David Ornstein confirms Liverpool's upcoming transfer plans
What had initially promised to be a busy final couple of days for Liverpool during the summer transfer window ultimately fizzled out into nothing. The Reds managed to confirm a deal for Bradley Barcola after weeks of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain.
That deal always felt like it was a matter of when and not if though.
The expectation was that there would be more business done. Andoni Iraola confirmed as much in the build-up to the season opener against Newcastle United.
“We will definitely sign some players. Some deals you have to wait until the end. But the end is the important picture, the one we will have on September 1. Because it is true that we are still quite thin.”
The reinforcements, however, did not arrive and the former Bournemouth boss now has to get the best out of an incomplete and unbalanced squad. It is an unenviable situation to be in. But it is one Iraola is going to have to manage, at least until January anyway.
Liverpool are already plotting summer move for Camara
Despite the uncertainty at board level following the investment from 1892 Holdings, and the potential full buy-out of FSG in the near future, coupled with the departures of CEO of Football Michael Edwards and the Sporting Director Richard Hughes, Liverpool are looking at ways to bolster their squad.
Monaco dominated deadline day, playing games with Everton and Chelsea right up until the 11pm cut-off point.
The Ligue 1 side needed to raise funds and put Folarin Balogun and Lamine Camara up for auction. Everton's interest in Balogun meant Monaco, much to the delight of Filipe Luis, could keep hold of the in-demand midfielder. A failed medical for the USMNT striker presented Chelsea with an opportunity to sign the Senegal international.
That was, however, until Monaco pulled the plug at the very last minute.
David Ornstein confirms Liverpool's interest in Camara
Speaking on Deadline Day, Ben Jacobs revealed Liverpool made a call to Monaco and Camara, informing both the club and the player that if a move didn't materialise, they may make a move for the 22-year-old in 2027. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Liverpool Football Club made a call this evening, and more than one I am told, to say to the camp of Camara, ‘Wait’, to say to Monaco, ‘Wait’.
David Ornstein of The Athletic has since claimed the interest in Camara was tied to the future of World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister.
"Information reached us around Deadline Day that if Alexis Mac Allister had left, their [Liverpool] top choice would have been Lamine Camara from Monaco, and so maybe we have to watch this space in the future to see what happens around that.”
Others have since followed this up, with Alex Crook of talkSPORT saying Liverpool "contacted Lamine Camara's advisers to express an interest in signing him next summer" while Paul Joyce of The Times said the Reds are, once again, focusing on overhauling the midfield.
