Contract breakthrough as Liverpool confirm deal
Liverpool decided to move on from Andy Robertson this summer.
The Scotland captain, 32, was denied a new contract by the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes. Previously earning £160k per week the left-back was allowed to move to Tottenham on a lucrative free transfer.
His departure opened a gap at left-back for a performer to back up first-choice Milos Kerkez. The Hungarian international is expected to be the Anfield side’s first-choice left-back in the years ahead following his £40m transfer from Bournemouth last year.
The fight to become Liverpool's back-up left-back
Kostas Tsimikas has returned to Merseyside after an unsuccessful loan stint at Serie A side Roma. The 30-year-old is unlikely to command many starts under Andoni Iraola in the Basque tactico’s first season in charge.
But the Greek will fulfil an important role as Kerkez’s understudy until his contract expires next summer. By then Liverpool will be looking for a new deputy left-back - and recent developments mean it could well be Calum Scanlon.
The 21-year-old joined Liverpool’s academy from Birmingham City back in 2020 - going on to feature twice for the first team. He spent part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Millwall before joining Cardiff City on loan in January.
New deal announced for Calum Scanlon
It has now been announced that Scanlon has rejoined the Bluebirds for their Championship comeback.
Cardiff begin their second-tier season on Monday night and Scanlon could be in line to feature. It has also been confirmed that the talented left-sider has signed a NEW Liverpool contract - following a previous renewal signed back in 2024.
“Calum Scanlon has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool and rejoined Cardiff City on loan for the 2026-27 campaign,” the announcement reads.
“The left-back agreed fresh terms with the Reds before returning to the Welsh capital for another temporary spell.
“The 21-year-old appeared eight times for the Bluebirds during the second half of last season, helping them earn promotion to the Championship.
“Brian Barry-Murphy's side host Wrexham in their league opener on Monday night. Scanlon has played two competitive matches for Liverpool's senior team to date, having arrived at the Academy set-up from Birmingham City in 2021.”
Calum Scanlon joins Cardiff on loan
It means that Scanlon is set to enjoy a fruitful spell on loan in Wales for the season ahead before eventually coming back into the fold on Merseyside next summer.
By that time Iraola will need a new left-back to cover Kerkez and a decent season on loan will put Scanlon right into contention.
