Chris Waddle tells Arsenal new man how to get regular starting place
Bruno Guimaraes has joined an Arsenal team that won the league title last season and boasts some of the best players in Europe, meaning he is no longer as far above his teammates as he was at Newcastle United.
The Magpies relied heavily on the Brazilian midfielder, and he delivered as one of their best players while also serving as the team’s captain. Guimaraes has now moved to a bigger team, but he remains a quality player who showed he can compete with the best through his performances at the 2026 World Cup.
At Arsenal, he is expected to continue improving, but there is no guaranteed place for him in the team. He will have to earn his position week by week while competing with several talented midfielders.
Guimaraes Faces Strong Competition
Chris Waddle has commented on Guimaraes’ decision to move to Arsenal and warned that the midfielder cannot expect to walk straight into the team as easily as he did at Newcastle United.
The former Newcastle player was an important figure for the Magpies, but Arsenal have a much deeper midfield and several players competing for places. Guimaraes will therefore have to demonstrate his quality consistently if he wants to establish himself as a regular starter.
His ability is not in question, but the level of competition at Arsenal means that he will have to perform at a high level to secure a permanent place in the starting line-up.
Waddle Explains His View
Waddle believes Guimaraes will have to work hard to become a regular starter at Arsenal, particularly with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard already occupying important midfield roles.
He said via Metro Sport:
‘But I thought it was a surprising move for Arsenal to bring him in. I think he’s a good player, but I wouldn’t put him up there as a must buy.
‘I think Newcastle fans liked him and he did a job for them, you can’t say he didn’t. But he’ll do well to keep a permanent starting shirt at Arsenal.
‘To be the first name picked in midfield alongside Declan Rice and in there with Martin Odegaard, he’s going to have to play exceptionally well.’
Guimaraes will now have the opportunity to prove himself at Arsenal, but Waddle’s comments underline the competition he faces as he attempts to secure a regular place in the team.
