Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez Reveals Four-Month Knee Injury After Dominant Display vs Wolves

Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has revealed that he has been suffering with a knee problem for four months and ruled himself out of Argentina duty this month.
Fernandez captained Chelsea to a 3-0 win over Wolves on Saturday night as goals from Malo Gusto, Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto saw the Blues ease into second in the table.
And the Argentine put in a commanding display in the middle of the park, claiming the Sky Sports Player of the Match award in the process.
'Enzo had a problem with his knee'
Fernandez was withdrawn in the 83rd minute in an absolutely dominant showing in the middle of the park.
Blues boss Enzo Maresca revealed at full time that Fernandez had asked to come off owing to a knee issue.
Speaking with Sky Sports on both Fernandez and Neto after the win, the Italian said: “Pedro Neto and Enzo [Fernandez], they asked for a change because Pedro had a problem with his groin and Enzo had a problem with his knee.”
The Argentina international, though, confirmed after the match that he has been suffering with a long-standing knee problem.
'I came with a bone edema that got worse'
“I will not be available with Argentina. I was just talking to the medical team because I had a problem with my knee in the last four months,” Fernandez revealed after Saturday's 3-0 win over Wolves.
“I came with a bone edema that got worse in the last weeks and months because we played a lot of games.
“I think the most important thing is coming to the end of the season and I think it's good to make this decision together. Always respecting the doctors and everything.”
Argentina won’t suffer too much without Fernandez this month as the 2022 World Cup winners have just one game during the final international break of the year.
Lionel Scaloni’s men face Angola in a friendly next week having already secured their spot at next summer’s showpiece.
Chelsea face tough run of games in November
Chelsea, however, will be monitoring Fernandez’s knee issue with great interest ahead of a gruelling run of fixtures following the international break.
The Blues return to league duties in two weeks’ time with a trip to newly-promoted Burnley before two huge home games in the space of five days.
Chelsea welcome Barcelona in the Champions League later this month and follow that up with a home meeting with league leaders Arsenal.
The Gunners were held to a 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Saturday evening, with Chelsea’s win over Wolves cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to six points ahead of Manchester City’s welcome of Liverpool on Sunday.
