The Addicks, led by boss Karen Hills, are back in the top flight of women’s football since their controversial disbandment in 2007. The two clubs faced off in April earlier this year in the quarter-finals of the Women’s FA Cup where it took the Reds extra time to prize a 1-0 victory. Charlton Athletic (Home side): Borne from unrelenting defensive resilience, newly-promoted Charlton amassed a 27-game unbeaten streak in WSL 2 last year. A poor end to the season meant they were made to settle for the promotion/relegation play-off against Leicester City, which they won on penalties.
Goalkeeper Sophie Wodehouse impressed that day and she will be key to the Addicks’ success in the upper tier now that they face much tougher, much more experienced strike forces.
But where Karen Hills’ side excel defensively, they need to score goals if they are to win games – something they lacked even in the league below. With only 31 goals in 22 matches Charlton scored fewer than times in the league, yet were promoted ahead of the likes of Bristol City, Southampton and Newcastle. Whether the on-loan pairing of Paula Partido and Lorena Azzaro can bolster their numbers remains to be seen.
Liverpool (Away team): There is a newfound optimism around the Red side of Merseyside. After a disappointing campaign last time out, a promising transfer window, coupled with a perfect pre-season illustrates all the signs of Liverpool being much improved this season.
Khiara Keating joining from Manchester City, manager Gareth Taylor knows well, locks off the goalkeeper issues plaguing the club in the past, while additions of Vivien Endemann and Mari Ward add exciting youthful exuberance to an already talented group.
As always, Swedish sensation Beata Olsson will be the Reds’ primary source of goals. In their final pre-season match against Durham Women she looked in scintillating touch, bagging a hat-trick inside 20 minutes and could even have had more in a 7-1 win. She will look to kick on after an eye-catching first season on Merseyside.

Star signing Ashleigh Neville looks set to make her competitive Charlton Athletic debut after scoring twice against Wolves in the club’s last pre-season match, while Emily van Egmond adds priceless experience in midfield.
Elsewhere, Australian duo Leah Davidson and Grace Johnston have both joined from down under and are in line to make their first appearance for the Addicks.

With the Women’s U20 World Cup ongoing, Taylor will be missing Zara Shaw and new signing Mao Itamura as she suffered an injury.
Elsewhere, Anna Josendal, who impressed in pre-season, is ruled out with a hamstring issue alongside Sophie Raum Haug and Lucy Parry who are also sidelined.
There are also doubts over the availability of Mari Ward and Mia Enderby who have both missed several pre-season matches with knocks. Taylor is hoping the pair will be fit in time to start the season curtain-raiser.
