Carrick on ‘immense’ Mainoo, Rashford’s Old Trafford return and Man Utd’s remaining transfer plans

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has praised ‘immense’ Kobbie Mainoo after his side’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.

Mainoo returned to the lineup after missing United’s disappointing defeat to Hull City in their season opener last weekend.

“On today’s performance, not much really,” Carrick answered on what the midfielder could improve. “I thought he was pretty much all round very, very good for a first start back.

“I understand Bruno gets a lot of credit today and he deserves that as well, but I thought Kobbie was immense in the middle of the pitch for us and underpinned the performance of the team.”

There was also a return for forward Marcus Rashford. He made his first start at Old Trafford in almost two years.

“I’m really pleased with Marcus,” insisted Carrick. “I thought we dealt with the whole day as normal, really, and I’m sure it was nice for him to be back and starting games here. And enjoying being involved in a good performance really.

“He’s one of our own, he’s living his dream, playing here now and trying to be successful and win.

“Adding Marcus feels like a new signing.”

With just over 48 hours remaining in the transfer window, the United boss continued: “I think the business that we’ve managed to do, I think I’m pleased with.

“I think we’re a better group, better squad, potentially a better team.

“We’re always open to if there’s something else to be able to add, so I wouldn’t shut that down. But as it stands, we’ll have to wait and see.”
