Carrick laments dropped points as Man United twice lead before last-gasp Everton equaliser

Michael Carrick has said Manchester United were disappointed to drop point at Everton after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser.

Manchester United twice led in an entertaining second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with three goals scored in the final seven minutes of a 2-2 draw between the teams.

Bryan Mbeumo had fired the Red Devils ahead early in the second half, before Tyrique George's first Everton goal levelled things up. United looked to have won it when substitute Benjamin Sesko headed Carrick's side back in front, only for a fantastic late hit from debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles to rescue Everton a point.

United have now conceded two goals in each of their opening three games of a league season for only the second time in the last 50 years. Despite that, Carrick saw positives in the performance and said his team were unfortunate to leave Merseyside without a win.

The result leaves Manchester United 11th in the Premier League table, with four points from three games.

“Yeah, for sure, it is [on conceding late]. I thought there were a lot of good things in that game for us. We played some good football and looked dangerous at times," he reflected to BBC Match of the Day.

"For the most part, I thought we defended really well as a team. A few more balls went into the box, making it a little bit more difficult for us when we should have seen the end of the game. We’re disappointed that we didn’t come away with a win.

“I thought that we played some really good football at times. Earlier on in the game and towards the end not so much, but we did a lot of good things, and looked dangerous. We caused them a lot of problems at certain times. Both were really good goals for different reasons, and the second one should have been the winner for us."
