Carrick backs Manchester United’s title hopes despite spending gap

Carrick was also asked about Kobbie Mainoo’s role given the increased competition in midfield following the summer arrivals, and was clear that the added depth is a positive rather than a threat to the 21-year-old’s progress.

He said Mainoo had made big strides last season, come back from the summer in excellent shape, and continues to push for more despite already establishing himself under the new regime. On the suggestion that his predecessor had defensive concerns about the midfielder, Carrick said coaches work with all the players individually and want Mainoo to keep expressing himself while developing the areas of his game still catching up with his talent.
