Brian Brobbey joins rare Premier League club with hat-trick in defeat

Brian Brobbey achieved the rare feat of scoring a Premier League hat-trick for a losing side at the weekend, as the Sunderland striker netted three times in defeat at Manchester City.

The 24-year-old did all he could as Sunderland lost an eight-goal thriller at the Etihad, though the match ball proved a consolation prize.

It had been almost 20 years since the last player scored a hat-trick in a losing effort, while it has only happened on six occasions in the Premier League era.

Incredibly, former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier achieved the feat twice. Le Tissier scored hat-tricks for Southampton during defeats to both Oldham Athletic and Nottingham Forest in the nineties.

Before Brobbey's treble, the most recent hat-trick for a losing side also saw more hat-trick history made. Wigan Athletic's 5-3 win over Blackburn Rovers saw hat-tricks scored on either side, the only occasion this has happened in the Premier League era.

Roque Santa Cruz scored all three Blackburn Rovers goals, while Marcus Bent also scored three as Wigan claimed the three points.
