Aston Villa are working on a deal to sign Rafael Leao, while Ollie Watkins has returned to training and apologised to his team-mates.

Villa have been linked with a number of attackers of late. After playing against Brighton on Sunday without a striker, the need to add firepower up top is evident.

There are currently links with Nicolas Jackson, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Leao.

A number of outlets suggest Villa are working on a deal for the AC Milan attacker, with some stating he's greenlit that move and others reporting that isn't the case.

Per Sacha Tavolieri, Leao has not told Villa he's willing to join them, as he wants to head to Galatasaray, having already agreed personal terms with the Turkish club.

Trusted insider Matteo Moretto states Villa and Milan have held exploratory talks over the transfer of Leao, and while the winger is open to the Premier League, he's yet to have contact with the English club.

Moretto reports the operation is in the early stages, and Galatasaray are still active in pursuit but hasn't come close to Milan's demands. Those are €50-60million (£42.7-51.3m)

Ollie Watkins back in Aston Villa training

The reason Villa had to face Brighton was due to Watkins refusing to train as he is hoping to move to Al-Hilal. Villa lost 4-0 and the Englishman appears no closer to the Saudi Arabian side, who he's agreed personal terms with.

The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, who covers Villa, reports Watkins has now returned to training with the club, and has apologised to his team-mates.

Villa wish to keep Watkins, but Unai Emery made a point of suggesting he was not committed to the club after the Brighton loss, while it's reported the striker has made clear his desire to leave.

Asked why Watkins was missing, Emery said: “This question is for him. Can you call him and make a question to him?”

“Ask him. I only can answer it by silence.

"The players that are here, they show it, their commitment, and it’s really fantastic. And this is the way.

“We had it in different moments. In four years we had it maybe five times in different circumstances. But we are going forward, moving always forward.”

It was recently suggested Al-Hilal were confident of landing Watkins, but recently had a £45million bid turned away - their fourth for the striker - so they don't appear to be making much progress.
