Arteta hails ‘magic’ Guimaraes as Arsenal edge Sunderland 2-0 to keep perfect Premier League start

Mikel Artetea ha said it doesn't get much better than Arsenal's win at Sunderland following a 'magic moment' from Bruno Guimaraes.

Arsenal rode their luck to preserve their perfect record in the Premier League this season after a hard-fought 2-0 win at The Stadium of Light.

The momentum of the game swung during two dramatic second-half minutes, as Arsenal opened the scoring just moments after Sunderland saw a penalty saved by David Raya.

Raya guessed right to deny Enzo Le Fee from the spot, before Bruno Guimaraes' broke the deadlock with a glorious goal. Just 121 seconds after Sunderland's saved spot-kick, the ex-Newcastle captain haunted his former side's fierce rivals with a stunning goal curled in off the crossbar.

Arsenal weathered a Sunderland storm late on before the win was sealed in the final seconds. Bukayo Saka scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Reinildo Mandava as Arsenal countered, with the Sunderland defender sent off for a second yellow card.

Arteta lauded his side for navigating a huge week with maximum points, after wins against Chelsea and Napoli before the trip to the North Ease.

“It’s a huge win, a huge week as well,” he said.

“Winning against Chelsea, winning in Napoli and now here - a really tough place to come, what a beautiful atmosphere and a really well-organised, really well-gelled team, that makes life really difficult for you.

“We were on the front foot right from the beginning. It’s a game that shifts momentum a lot - the moment you make a little mistake, a little foul or a throw-in, the momentum shifts. Then you need to cope with the rollercoaster of that, emotionally it’s a game that requires a lot from the players. We were on top, then an element of suffering - obviously then the decision of the penalty comes in that can change completely the course of the game.

“David makes an unbelievable save afterwards, and then the magic moments that Bruno did as a finisher, it doesn’t get much better than that - an unbelievable goal, and unbelievable assist to put Bukayo through, and we earn the right to win the points.”
