Arsenal are exploring a shock move for Napoli star and former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, reports TEAMtalk.
McTominay moved to Napoli 18 months’ ago and immediately became a fan favourite for the Italian side.
The 28-year-old wrote his name into Napoli folklore having played a vital role in their Serie A title triumph, landing the MVP award in the process.
In addition, the Scotland international was instrumental as the Tartan Army booked their first World Cup spot since 1998 in the week, scoring an incredible bicycle kick to put Steve Clarke’s side ahead in an eventual 4-2 win over Denmark.
Arsenal among McTominay suitors
A return to the Premier League in 2026 has been mooted with Arsenal among interested parties should Napoli consider a sale.
The Gunners are well stocked in midfield as things stand, but the addition of McTominay would bring the requisite strength in depth to allow Mikel Arteta’s men to compete on multiple fronts.
Arsenal aren’t the only Premier League side to be credited with an interest in the Napoli star, with north London rivals Tottenham and former side United also monitoring McTominay’s movements.
However, it would take an astronomical bid for Napoli to even consider cashing in on their one of their star players.
Indeed, it’s been reported that any bid less than £70m would be outright rejected by the defending Serie A champions, while it would take some doing to convince McTominay to leave Napoli having rebuilt his career with the Italian giants.
“I’m happy in Naples,” McTominay said last month as he moved to quash rumours over a potential return to England in the New Year.
Napoli looking to return to winning ways this weekend
McTominay will now hope to help Napoli get back to winning ways in their bid to defend the Scudetto.
Antonio Conte’s side have dropped to fourth having failed to win their two games prior to the international break, as they followed up a 0-0 draw with Como with a 2-0 loss at Bologna.
Napoli welcome Atalanta to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Saturday, with the visitors out to send a seven-game winless streak.
The poor run of form cost former Southampton manager Ivan Juric his job at Atalanta, who subsequently hired Raffaele Palladino as his replacement earlier this month.
