Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City: Player ratings for City as Maresca era begins with a whimper
Enzo Maresca's tenure as the Manchester City was off to a whimper rather than a wham as his team were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday.
Riccardo Calafiori drew the first blood inside the opening 30 seconds of the clash before Kai Havertz doubled their advantage midway through the half.
Martin Odegaard piled more misery after the break with a third as City were outclassed on the day. Not even their prolific marksman Erling Haaland, who played his first since the World Cup, could lift his team up on the day.
However, this was still the first match of the season and a first with all the first team stars in nearly three months. The alarm bells haven't gone off yet and Maresca could still bring out the best from his squad in the months ahead.
Here are the player ratings from the Community Shield defeat:
Gianluigi Donnarumma - 6: Really poor reactions to all three of Arsenal's goals; for a player who's capable of so much more, this was utterly disappointing
Abdukodir Khusanov- 7.5: The Uzbek had solid game with nine defensive contributions and winning all nine of his duels; easily City's best defender on the day
Ruben Dias - 7: Dominant in the air, not allowing Arsenal to have much joy from either set-pieces of incoming crosses while also distributing the ball with elan
Josko Gvardiol - 6: His better moments came at the other end of the field, which tells you a lot about his defending game on the day; drove fordward a few times and headed a corner narrowly wide
Nico O'Reilly - 5.5: While he got forward well, O'Reilly was found wanting time and again defensively with Arsenal overloading his side of the pitch to build attacks
Elliot Anderson - 6: Couldn't have hoped for a worse debut following his big-money move, but Anderson emerged as a reliable source of crosses with six on the day; hooked off at the hour mark
Mateo Kovacic - 6.5: Composure on the ball and a few vertical passes made for a good viewing, but ultimately the Croatian wasn't able to influence the game much with Arsenal in cruise-control
Antoine Semenyo - 7: Took the game to Arsenal with his direct style of play, attempting three shots while also feeding his attacking cohorts with six crosses
Phil Foden - 7: Liveliest of all City's attackers earlier on, driving forward with poise and purpose and always looking to make something happen
Jeremy Doku - 6: Came within a good chance after City fell 2-0 behind but was unable to bury it while looking subdued for most of the time on the field
Erling Haaland - 6: A forgetful return to the side for the Norwegian ace, who was well below his best while seeing one shot saved by David Raya
