Wayne Rooney believes a deal for Myles Lewis-Skelly should be an ‘absolute no-brainer’ for Manchester United this summer.

The Red Devils have a fortnight remaining to finalise their incomings and outgoings before Michael Carrick’s squad is set in stone until the winter.

Myles Lewis-Skelly to United: The state of play

Rooney has shared his verdict following reports that Lewis-Skelly had been offered to United last week.

Arsenal won’t force the 19-year-old out the door by any means, but they are open to facilitating his sale in order to raise funds, having just shelled out a whopping £75 million on Bruno Guimaraes.

Lewis-Skelly primarily operates as a left-back and midfielder, and with Mikel Arteta now boasting high-quality depth in both positions, they are willing to part ways with the youngster.

It’s thought that he is valued in the region of £60m by the Gunners, which would generate pure profit due to his status as an academy graduate.

Why Lewis-Skelly isn’t INEOS’ top target

From United’s perspective, Lewis-Skelly is firmly an option in the closing stages of the window, but they would prefer his compatriot Lewis Hall.

Newcastle United deeming the full-back as off-limits this summer means INEOS have been made to consider alternatives, including a more experienced option in the form of RB Leipzig captain David Raum.

Yet, Rooney has encouraged his former club to meet Arsenal’s demands for their versatile star and get him added to Michael Carrick’s squad as swiftly as possible.

What did Rooney have to say about Lewis-Skelly?

“Lewis Skelly, we’re hearing that he is available for not much money, I think it’s an absolute no-brainer,” said Rooney on Stick to United.

“If you can get a player that can play left back and central midfield, [then sign them]. He’s young, and he’s got a massive future ahead of him. I think that’s an absolute no-brainer if you can bring him in.”

“It’s not a great look for Arsenal, but I can see why they might need to sell,” United’s record goalscorer continued. “But if you’re United and a player like Lewis-Skelly becomes available…”
