5 biggest winners and losers from Mykhaylo Mudryk to Tottenham
As was feared, Tottenham Hotspur have indeed signed Mykhaylo Mudryk on loan from rivals Chelsea after the Iliman Ndiaye deal suddenly fell through, thanks to Richarlison blocking a move back to Everton over a possible wage cut.
Mudryk has not played football in two years and comes to Tottenham as a massive risk. Here are the five biggest winners and losers as the former Shakhtar Donetsk star reunites with Roberto De Zerbi.
Winner: Roberto De Zerbi
Once again, the Tottenham board has made a clear statement to Roberto De Zerbi that they are going to back him up no matter what. Signing Jan Paul van Hecke with just one year left on his contract for 60 million euros was controversial enough, and while Mudryk is just a loan signing, he hasn't played in years and has a terribly low reputation. Spurs are signing him solely on the back of De Zerbi's endorsement, and it is a further sign that the Italian manager is king in North London right now.
Loser: Tottenham fans
Not a single soul in the Tottenham fan base was advocating for Mykhaylo Mudryk to join the Lilywhites, and now that he is here, there are a lot of people who are incensed, to the point where there are some real overreactions about the summer transfer window as a whole for Spurs. But Spurs did well to bring in the players that they did, even if Mudryk is a sour ending and not the winger they wanted vs. Cody Gakpo or Iliman Ndiaye.
Winner: Chelsea
Chelsea have been desperate to find a solution for Mudryk for a while now, but nobody was even pretending to bite. Now, the Blues have dumped Mudryk off on Tottenham and dangled a 75 million pound option to buy. This was a perfect deal for them.
Loser: Omar Marmoush
Omar Marmoush is a key starter for Tottenham Hotspur and Mudryk probably won't start very often, but since the Ukrainian international is favored by Roberto De Zerbi, he should get some starts on the left wing. And that's not ideal for Marmoush, as Mudryk is poor at creating chances for others and a bigger black hole in possession than Mathys Tel.
Winner: Mathys Tel
Speaking of Mathys Tel, even though Mudryk is technically more competition for him on the left wing, he is a big downgrade on Iliman Ndiaye and not nearly as much of a threat to the Frenchman's minutes as the Everton winger would have been.
