2026/27 Premier League Power Rankings: How Tottenham stack up after the September break

Tottenham Hotspur fans have had way too much time to ruminate over the losses during this September international break, and as the agonizing three weeks pass us by, it's time to take stock of just how badly Spurs measure up to the rest of the Premier League. They are last in the table, but are they last in our power rankings? Let's see.

1. Manchester City

There is little doubt that Manchester City is the Premier League’s best team right now, as they are a perfect five-for-five this season. Hell, a lineup of their reserves would compete for European qualification. But the club was recently found guilty of 114 financial charges. Will Man City be docked points? Will they be banned from making transfers? And how will the team on the pitch respond? These questions will not only loom over the club coming out of the international break, but they will also cast doubt on the Premier League season should Man City remain at the top of the table.

2. Arsenal

Had they beat Brighton in their last game, Arsenal would have gone into the break as the undisputed kings of the Premier League. Instead, they got thrashed at the Amex and dropped their first points of the season. Still, Opta rates the defending Premier League champions as the best club team in the world, which is probably correct, especially when fullback Jurrien Timber regains fitness and all-world centre back William Saliba returns from injury.

3. Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton are starting a fullback on the left wing. They are starting teenagers in the number 9 and at right centre back. And manager Fabian Huerzler’s hair transplants have yet to take root. None of that matters when Maxim De Cuyper, that dexterous fullback/winger, is involving himself in goals. Or when Charalampos Kostoulas and Luka Voskovic, those inexperienced teenagers, are some of the best young players in the world. Or when 35-year-old midfielder Pascal Gross, with his seven goal involvements in five games, is going to win the 2027 Ballon d’Or.

4. Liverpool

So what if Liverpool are a boring side with zero depth and a new manager who is trying to figure out the best lineup and tactics? They haven’t lost a game. Manager Andoni Iraola will figure things out and Liverpool will comfortably qualify for the Champions League.

5. Brentford

The first Premier League match I ever attended was a Fulham-Brentford tie at Craven Cottage. Brentford comfortably defeated their hosts, and the home fans comforted themselves by chanting to the visitors, “You’re just a bus stop in Hounslow.” That bus stop hasn’t lost this season, and in Brentford’s two wins they dismantled two bigger London neighbors in Tottenham and Chelsea.

6. Leeds United

Leedshave been the Premier League’s most competent team, and new centre back Tarik Muharemovic is a marauding beast. Perhaps more importantly, they are far better than their archnemesis Manchester United.

7. Newcastle United

Newcastle United sold stars Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes, and also loaned out forward Nick Woltemade. They’ve also endured injuries to defenders Dan Burn and Tino Livramento, to midfielders Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez, and to forwards Anthony Elanga and Will Osula. And yet: They have claimed eight points this season. For that, they deserve a place in the power rankings much greater than where they sit in the table.

8. Everton

So begins the midtable mush. Everton is fine.

9. Chelsea

Is Cole Palmer hurt (again)? Can Chelsea score without the injured Joao Pedro? Is Xabi Alonso a good manager? Who knows! BlueCo-era Chelsea have been a circus. Enjoy it while it lasts.

10. Hull City

Hull City’s early season magic, when they took eight points from four games, is not fraudulent because they lost at Newcastle before the break. It is fraudulent because magic is not real. Hull City is, at best, a mid-table team (complimentary). Expect them to slide down the table as the season wears on.

11. Manchester United

“What’s that? Sorry, I was watching highlights of the 2012/13 Manchester United team. Do you mind repeating yourself? No, I’m not crying! It was just a little itch on my eye.” — every United fan right now.

12. Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are the poor man’s version of Leeds United. Mostly good and some great players fill out a competent lineup that can make deep runs in cup competitions and make life difficult for teams up the table. The problem at the City Ground, though, is Forest makes their lives difficult when playing teams down the table. (See: Coventry City.)

13. Sunderland

Sunderland scrapped their way into European qualification last season, and I mean scrapped literally. Brian Brobbey deserves a WWE title belt. Now, Sunderland on just four points as they embark on a two-games-a-week schedule, but the standing in the Premier League table sells them short. They’re eighth in expected goals conceded, and they possess one of the most potent offenses. Sunderland rank fifth in xG and are tied with Man City for most xG per shot.

14. Ipswich Town

Wait, the Tractor Boys have two wins this season? What in the Ed Sheeran is going on in East England?

15. Aston Villa

Every notable player forced their way out of Villa this summer, which is odd considering their Champions League status and manager Unai Emery’s bona fides. It was no surprise, then, when it took Villa five tries to get their first win.

16. Crystal Palace

In the not-too-distant past, Crystal Palace employed Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Marc Guehi, Daniel Munoz, and Adam Wharton. Now, only Wharton and a hobbled Mateta remain, and the results this season indicate as much. And it won’t be long until Wharton, one of England’s most underrated players, is sold for a princely sum. Hope you didn’t blink. You might have missed Crystal Palace’s golden age.

17. Coventry City

In the first four matches, Coventry looked like a zombie stumbling its way to one of the worst Premier League seasons ever. Then they pulled a 1-0 victory out of their hats away at Nottingham Forest. Do they still have it in them to be historically bad? Absolutely. But their win is enough to vault them from the power ranking’s relegation zone.

18. Bournemouth

Bournemouth are one of three Premier League teams without a win this season, though they possess just a -2 goal differential. They’ll be fine, especially when wunderkind Junior Kroupi returns from a foot injury. However, you can’t rise in these esteem rankings if you've taken just three points. You play to win the game.

19. Tottenham

We'll always have the 5-1 win against Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

20. Fulham

I hope Alvaro Arbeloa has spent the international break updating his résumé.
