West Ham United are still waiting for their first Championship win. The London side lost 2-1 at home to Charlton Athletic, despite a debut goal from Joël Piroe.

West Ham went down from the Premier League last season and already discovered last week that this campaign will not be straightforward either. They drew 2-2 away at Burnley.

A week on, The Hammers looked to put that right at home to Charlton. The visitors had won their opening game last week, beating Derby County 2-1.

Charlton struck again at West Ham. After just seven minutes, the visitors led 1-0 through a fine overhead kick from Lloyd Jones.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was 2-0. Tyreece Campbell punished some sloppy West Ham defending with a low shot into the far corner.

By then, Joël Veltman had come on as a substitute, and West Ham briefly had hope again with 15 minutes left. Piroe, who joined West Ham on loan from Leeds United this week, tapped in the rebound to make it 2-1.

That was as close as the home side came. West Ham now sit a disappointing 17th, while Charlton are second.
