Welbeck arrival leaves Delap facing uncertain Chelsea role

Liam Delap’s Chelsea future is in fresh doubt after Danny Welbeck’s arrival increased competition for places in attack.

Welbeck completed his move from Brighton on a two-year deal, and talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs said Delap could be among the Chelsea players who may need to seek regular football elsewhere. Jacobs cited historical interest from Everton and Newcastle, as well as growing Premier League interest more generally.

Jacobs also highlighted the importance of departures for Chelsea, with the club having added further options at centre-forward this summer. The increased competition leaves Delap facing an uncertain role in the squad.

Reported price range

A Yahoo Sports report, carrying reporting from The Football Faithful, says Chelsea want between £35million and £40million for Delap should he leave this summer. The same report says he would be free to leave if a suitable offer arrived.

Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich last summer after the club activated his £30million release clause. In his first season at Stamford Bridge, the 23-year-old made 41 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals, including one in the Premier League.

His record at Ipswich nonetheless showed what he can offer at this level. Delap scored 12 goals during the 2024/25 campaign, Ipswich’s first season back in the top flight.

Competition for places

Welbeck’s arrival has added to Chelsea’s forward competition, while Emmanuel Emegha has also joined from Strasbourg. Jacobs suggested that players who find themselves lower in the pecking order may have to reassess their situations, particularly with Chelsea having only domestic football.

Delap was used as a late substitute when Chelsea lost 2-1 to ten-man Tottenham in Sydney on Saturday. The Blues begin the 2026/27 Premier League season away to Fulham on August 24 under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Premier League interest

Everton and Newcastle are the clubs identified by Jacobs as having historical interest in Delap. His comments also pointed to wider Premier League interest.

For now, Welbeck’s move has sharpened the focus on Delap’s place in Chelsea’s attacking group and on whether he can secure the regular football Jacobs said could become a key consideration.
