Weghorst misses penalty, but FC Twente do not pay dearly for it

FC Twente beat Telstar 1-0 at De Grolsch Veste on Wednesday evening. The hard-fought win lifts the Tukkers into fifth place in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie.

Very little happened in the first half in Enschede. After 34 minutes, Younes Taha struck the post from a Wout Weghorst assist. A goalless scoreline at the break came as no real surprise.

After the restart, the game sprang into life. Lars Unnerstall denied Rui Mendes, while Ronald Koeman junior kept out a Weghorst header. Taha and Ramiz Zerrouki also posed a threat going forward.

Twente kept the pressure on and got their reward. The lively Taha whipped in the cross and Sondre Ørjasæter turned it in from close range with an acrobatic finish. Relief swept around the home side, on the pitch and in the stands.

By the closing stages, Twente had a fair degree of control over the match in Enschede. Telstar made plenty of substitutions after the break but could not create any real danger in front of Unnerstall's goal.

Things nearly got even worse for Telstar when Sem Valk gave away a penalty by bringing down Weghorst. The towering striker took it himself, but Koeman junior saved to his horror.

Still, Twente could not find a second goal. It did not matter. They took all three points and settled into the Eredivisie's upper reaches.
