Luka Modric had not played a game in Spain since May 24 2025, until last night, when the AC Milan midfielder returned.

Considering how long Modric spent with Real Madrid, there were certainly some who thought that he’d never leave. In fact, he also probably thought that he would retire in Spain at one point. However, with fuel still in the tank and his minutes in Madrid slowing, he moved to Milano.

The love he’s received wearing Rossoneri colours is no surprise. A fan of the club – aside from being one of the best midfielders to ever play the game – he was instantly taken to, with his quality still very clear.

So, when it seemed he could depart last season, the same emotion felt in Madrid was felt in Milano. The feeling that you were saying goodbye to a legend. However, he opted to renew his deal with the Diavolo, putting a (probable) return to Spain on hold for the time being.

He would return to Spain before hanging up his boots professionally though, maybe for the final time in such an accessible setting, with Spain drawing Croatia in the Nations League.

Slavan Bilic has been keen to manage his minutes, especially with the midfielder struggling with flu in the past week. Nevertheless, he still made an appearance in the game and his reception needs no words, as @YihiRM posted on X.
