Ruben van Bommel made a huge impression on Sunday afternoon during the Eredivisie clash between PSV and FC Groningen. The left winger did not score himself, but with his pace, dribbling and build-up play he was constantly at the heart of PSV's threat and stood out as the match's top performer.

Van Bommel made his mark early. For the 1-1, he burst down the left and drilled in a low cross, after which Thijmen Blokzijl turned the ball into his own net. Groningen's defence still could not get to grips with the attacker after that, as he beat Jorg Schreuders with ease several times and even saw his direct opponent hooked at half-time.

Then Van Bommel showed his class again for the 2-1. After a strong run from the left, he put the ball on a plate at the far post, where Ivan Perisic fired home. Shortly before half-time, Van Bommel also sent Guus Til through, after which the midfielder was clipped on his heels and Ricardo Pepi converted the resulting penalty.

After the break, Van Bommel carried on unfazed. For the 5-1, Sergiño Dest picked him out during a lightning-fast counter, after which he rounded goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen and pulled the ball back to Dest, who was able to finish. Soon after, Van Bommel created another huge chance for Pepi, but the American striker could not turn the ball into the empty net despite having gone past Vaessen.

His display also sparked a huge reaction on X. "Van Bommel, man... he is completely on fire. Fantastic!" one reaction read, while another viewer wrote: "Van Bommel is playing unbelievably well. One hundred per cent Xavi takes him straight away for the Netherlands." "Ruben van Bommel, he is going to be a star" and "Van Bommel phenomenal" were also among the responses.

Some viewers even went a step further and were already thinking aloud about the Netherlands national team. "Is Ruben van Bommel ready for the Netherlands?" Wierd Duk asked, while another supporter wrote: "Van Bommel in the Netherlands... that's what I'm waiting for." Another striking reaction read: "Ruben van Bommel, you have just earned yourself a transfer to the back of my PSV shirt."

After 67 minutes, Van Bommel's impressive afternoon came to an end as he and Noah Fernandez went off, with the winger replaced to loud applause. "Without scoring himself, he was the main man for PSV today," concluded PSV watcher Rik Elfrink, while another supporter summed up the feeling perfectly: "This is why people come to the stadium. Ruben van Bommel is on fire. Brilliant."
