Chelsea have beaten Luton Town at home in a pretty simple cruise in the EFL Cup, thanks to two second half goals.

Chelsea have beaten Luton Town in their first game of the EFL Cup this year.

It was a close first half which ended 0-0. Both sides had their chances. Chelsea played some really nice moves, but are still very clearly a team coming together, especially this largely second string group. There were mistakes at set pieces, mistimed runs and passes, the sort of things you’d expect in August.

Rusty Chelsea play some good stuff to beat Luton

The breakthrough came after half time. A lovely pinged crossfield pass from Pep Chavarria switched the play and led to Malo Gusto getting in down the right. He stood a ball up to the far post where Danny Welbeck, making his debut, was on hand to leap and head home.

The second came from Estevao, making his first start since a bad hamstring injury in March. He burst away from his defender down the right and fired a shot across goal. It was going wide, but a deflection helped the ball in.

Picking Cole Palmer and Reece James to start the game was somewhat surprising from Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea have this evening agreed a deal to sign a new first team goalkeeper, an exclusive from Matt Law has revealed.

Palmer spoke earlier today about why he felt like he was going to be back to his best this season.
