The royal side thought it had snatched the equaliser

Video technology disallowed a superb goal from substitute Carlos Espi in the 87th minute of Real Madrid's clash with hosts Real Betis at La Cartuja on Friday evening, in the fourth round of La Liga.

Espi had replaced team-mate Federico Valverde in the 82nd minute. Within five minutes he lashed home a stunning overhead kick, meeting a cross from Vinicius Junior.

The young striker's joy proved short-lived. Video technology flagged an offside at the start of the move, wiping out the goal the visitors thought had earned them a 1-1 equaliser.

Troy Parrott had put Betis 1-0 up in the 81st minute, a strike that came against the run of a match Madrid had dominated for long stretches.

Los Blancos could not find a way back, even after winning a penalty in the closing minutes. French star Kylian Mbappe failed to convert, and the game finished 1-0 to Real Betis.
