Van Persie scores for Feyenoord, who go down in closed-door friendly
Feyenoord lost 2-1 to Belgian side KVC Westerlo in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Monday. Shaqueel van Persie had given the Rotterdam side the lead, but that ultimately proved insufficient to record a victory.
Van Persie junior pounced on a corner from Sem Steijn and finished superbly. Westerlo levelled before half-time and took charge of the friendly after the break.
Those selected from the start were the players left on the bench against Go Ahead Eagles in Sunday's 2-2 draw. Sipke Hulshoff and Saïd Bakkati, rather than Giovanni van Bronckhorst, issued the instructions from the touchline.
After the break, Casper Tengstedt and Jivayno Zinhagel replaced Van Persie and Jordan Lotomba. Gonçalo Borges then made way for Luka Ivanusec on the right wing after an hour.
Tengstedt got two late chances to cancel out the 2-1 deficit but could not take either. Feyenoord's players left the pitch with a narrow defeat.
Attention now turns back to the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. Feyenoord, who dropped costly points against Go Ahead on Sunday, travel to newly promoted SC Cambuur on Sunday. Cambuur are still without a point after two matches.
Feyenoord line-up: Bossin; Lotomba (Zinhagel), Deijl, Ahmedhodzic, Wessels; Steijn, Kasanwirjo, Van den Elshout; Van Persie (Tengstedt), Ferri, Borges (Ivanusec).
