United U19s beat Club Brugge to reach Otten Cup play-off final

Manchester United’s U19s beat Club Brugge 2-0 in the 5th-8th place semi-final at the Otten Innovation Cup, after falling short of the tournament’s main semi-finals, to set up a play-off final against SL Benfica on Sunday.

Darren Fletcher’s side needed victory over Adelaide United in their final group match, along with a favourable result elsewhere, to have a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. United dominated the first half and led 2-0 through Jaume Camacho’s long-range strike and a Camron Mpofu penalty, only for Adelaide to fight back to 2-2 through a fine goal and an error at the back that saw Charlie Hardy’s clearance blocked by Harry Crawford and into the net.

The result in the other group match meant United would have remained in third place even with a win, confirming their place in the placement rounds rather than the semi-finals.

United respond with a dominant display against Brugge

Fletcher’s side responded in the 5th-8th place fixture against Club Brugge, taking control of midfield from the start and causing trouble with a high press that smothered the Belgian side in their defensive third.

United’s press produced the opener when Manu Ziro poked the ball away from a Brugge defender and Mpofu pounced with a low first-time finish. Ziro then got on the scoresheet himself just before half-time, finishing a rebound after Jariyah Shah’s initial effort was saved. In United’s best performance of the tournament, Club Brugge never threatened a comeback as the Red Devils ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

Benfica awaits in the play-off final

The result sets up a 5th-6th place play-off final against Benfica on Sunday, giving Fletcher’s group the opportunity to finish the tournament with another victory.
