Tuttosport: A return to Portugal – how Moreira could ‘close the circle’ against Benfica
Diego Moreira has not had the easiest start to life at AC Milan, but things could change after a brace at the weekend.
Moreira joined Milan with excitement, then when the fee was reported, the reaction was reeled in a little – or even a lot. A debut against Juventus didn’t allow him to show his best self. So, questions about his value to the team were asked.
However, they have been silenced after the game against Lazio, where he scored twice to save the Rossoneri at the Olimpico. Now, his eyes are on a start against Benfica on Wednesday night.
Moreira’s full circle moment
As Tuttosport writes, via MilanPress, the Belgian spent three years in Portugal with Benfica – having left the Standard Liege academy in 2020 – and it’s there where he took off. Of course, it was capped with him winning the Youth League.
From there, he’s struggled to find that home after Portugal. He’s been at Chelsea, Lyon and Strasbourg, but never found a long-term home. The hope is that the trend ends in Milano, where the Diavolo can offer him a starting spot.
So, against Benfica, the circle could close if he’s given a chance as a starter. Having scored a brace from the bench this weekend, there are very few reasons to not give him a starting role, but we’ll see.
