Tottenham Registration Cleared, but De Zerbi Has Savio Call to Make

Savio’s registration with the Premier League and Football Association has been confirmed, making Tottenham’s new signing eligible for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup second-round tie against Charlton Athletic.

Tottenham confirmed the £85m deal for the winger from Manchester City on Tuesday. Spurs will pay an initial £75m, with a further £10m available in add-ons, and £5m of the potential bonuses is understood to be effectively guaranteed. It is a club-record sale for City, surpassing Julian Alvarez’s £82m move to Atletico Madrid in 2024, while Savio’s arrival takes Tottenham’s summer spending beyond £300m, according to Sky Sports. The 22-year-old had been a long-term Tottenham target.

De Zerbi unsure over Savio’s readiness

Eligibility does not guarantee a start. Roberto De Zerbi said he was unsure whether Savio would be ready to play against Charlton or be named among the substitutes, according to the Standard.

Savio had been left out of Manchester City’s last two squads before the move, leaving De Zerbi to assess whether to use him immediately.

Why the timing matters

Tottenham lost 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend, while James Maddison has suffered a shoulder injury and Mohammed Kudus remains unavailable with a quad problem, according to the Standard. Savio said he was happy to join Tottenham after speaking with De Zerbi, who told the winger he wanted to help him reach the highest level, according to the Guardian.

Whether Savio makes his Tottenham debut against Charlton on Wednesday will be De Zerbi’s decision. The registration issue has been resolved, leaving the head coach to determine his role in the match.
