To pave the way for the World Cup final? Spain nominates the Bernabeu to host a major tournament

The dispute has recently escalated over hosting the 2030 World Cup final.

Spain are to submit a bid to host the final stage of the UEFA Nations League, part of the Spanish Football Federation's drive to cement the country's standing as a host of major football competitions and events.

Rafael Louzán, president of the Spanish Football Federation, confirmed the plan in the mixed zone at Wembley Stadium after Saturday evening's 3-2 win over England. His country would put forward its candidacy to host the semi-final and final, he said, with the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and the José Zorrilla in Valladolid named in the bid.

Spain keep expanding their role in staging football's biggest occasions. Alongside Morocco and Portugal, the country is set to host the 2030 World Cup, with three celebratory matches also taking place in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Among the venues in contention for the 2030 World Cup final, the Santiago Bernabéu stands out, and the Spanish are adamant the showpiece should be held on home soil.

Morocco have other ideas. This September, Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Moroccan Football Federation, announced that the final would be staged at the new Hassan II Stadium, a ground under construction with an expected capacity of 115,000.

FIFA, though, have yet to decide which stadium will host the next World Cup final.
