Chelsea are a little short in midfield this season – but they won’t be signing a former Liverpool midfielder on a free.
The Daily Mail’s Chelsea Confidential is always full of interesting news about what’s going on behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, and this week’s transfer special is no exception.
Kieran Gill focused on the midfield, where Chelsea were left a little short after selling Enzo Fernandez on deadline day and then failing to replace him in time.
With the dust settled, it’s clear that Moises Caicedo and Reece James are probably the first choice pair, with Romeo Lavia and Jordan Henderson backing them up. Valentin Barco and Malo Gusto are also available.
Chelsea deny rumours about veteran free agent
He adds the detail that Chelsea say that there is no truth in the rumours that they contacted 35 year old free agent Georginio Wijnaldum about a short term deal after it became clear they were going to be left short.
We’re glad to hear it – if we get to the point where the 6 midfielders we’ve got aren’t able to play, we’d rather see a youngster used than a free agent veteran. There’s not long to wait until January, when the situation can be looked at again.
The Caicedo injury is what this all hinges on, and we will get more information on that this afternoon.
