Licence withdrawn for driving under the influence of alcohol
Daniel Maldini has landed himself in serious legal and ethical trouble. Italian police tests revealed he was driving under the influence of alcohol at a level close to double the permitted limit, and this just hours after leading his side Cagliari to a precious win over Atalanta with a decisive penalty.
Less than 12 hours after scoring the decisive penalty that gave Cagliari a precious 2-1 win over Atalanta in Bergamo, the son of Milan legend Paolo Maldini found himself at the centre of a resounding scandal in Milan. Tests showed a high level of alcohol in his blood following a horrific road accident.
The crash happened at around a quarter past five on Sunday morning in the city, when his Porsche Carrera collided with another vehicle. Six people suffered minor injuries, among them the 24-year-old player, who was taken to hospital for examinations before being allowed to leave later the same day.
Positive test and licence withdrawn
According to local police sources who spoke to Reuters, the first alcohol test at the scene showed a level of 0.91 grams per litre. The second recorded 0.89 grams per litre, close to double Italy's legal limit of 0.5 grams per litre.
Authorities suspended the player's licence immediately after the positive result. He also underwent a drug test, which Cagliari confirmed on Monday came back completely negative, adding that he will join training normally to prepare for the upcoming matches.
An Italian security source cited by Reuters explained that the results of the official drug test conducted by the police would not appear for three or four days.
Maldini has previously turned out for Milan, Atalanta and Lazio before settling at Cagliari, and he is one of the rising names in Italian football. Six caps for the Italy national team already sit on his record, and he carries a heavy legacy as the son of Paolo Maldini, one of the greatest defenders in the history of football.
