Tottenham Women’s unbeaten start to the WSL season ended in a 6-1 home defeat to London City Lionesses, who overwhelmed Spurs at Brisbane Road with two goals apiece from Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani. Sky Sports reported that Spurs had been in form before kick-off; the afternoon still became a sharp reminder of how quickly a match can get away from them.

London City punished every opening

Putellas opened the scoring in the third minute, reacting first after Lize Kop parried a long-range effort from Grace Geyoro. Diani made it 2-0 by finishing Lucía Corrales’ cross, then Putellas struck again from a corner after Danielle van de Donk’s effort had been blocked.

Van de Donk missed an open goal that could have made it four before the break, but Tottenham had little to celebrate: Julie Blakstad’s free-kick, tipped onto the bar, was their only first-half chance. Corrales did make it 4-0 seven minutes after half-time, turning in Diani’s cross.

Victoria Pelova pulled one back from Blakstad’s delivery, but the response did not change the shape of the afternoon. Kop’s clearance struck Diani and rebounded to the forward, who scored into an empty net; Delphine Cascarino added the sixth with virtually the last kick.

A sudden reversal for Spurs

Putellas had scored her first goal for London City the previous weekend against Brighton, before taking that form into this match. Tottenham’s recent result against Brighton offers a reminder of the contrast: here, London City were clinical and Spurs could not contain them.

The defeat ended Tottenham’s unbeaten run in the top flight, while London City’s emphatic win underlined the threat they pose in the WSL title race. For Spurs, the scoreline leaves little room to soften the verdict: conceding six at home is a collapse, not merely a poor result.
