Serie A superstar opens door to Real Madrid move – “If Mourinho called me…”

Real Madrid had a very productive summer transfer window, with six new players added to Jose Mourinho’s squad. The Portuguese added proven quality, experience and attacking threat to the players he already had at his disposal, and it leaves his side in a good place for the 2026-27 season, which has started with three wins out of three in La Liga.

The likes of Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva were signed by Real Madrid after Mourinho explicitly asked for them to be brought to the Bernabeu. The Special One was given a lot more control in the transfer process compared to many of his predecessors, and if he stays in charge for a while, that would surely continue to be the case.

That could be good news for Scott McTominay, whom Mourinho knows well from their time together at Manchester United. The Scottish midfielder has been a sensation since moving to Napoli in 2024, and if a move to Real Madrid ever materialised, he admitted to Corriere della Sera (via Diario AS) that it would be difficult to turn down.

No space for someone like McTominay at this stage

While there is no doubt that McTominay is a top player, his profile is one that Real Madrid already have with a certain Jude Bellingham. Furthermore, Mourinho also has Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz and Bernardo Silva as players that can operate as an attacking midfielder, and unless any of them were to leave in 2027, there would be no place for the Scotsman at the Bernabeu.

However, he is the sort of profile that Mourinho appreciates, so if it was decided that a more like-for-like Bellingham backup was needed, McTominay would be a very interesting option to consider.
