Savio is quietly in company that only Lamine Yamal can match
So far, Tottenham Hotspur have to be disappointed with the return they have gotten from their big summer signings. Sandro Tonali has been decent in recent weeks but not remotely worth 100 million pounds, Andy Robertson looks like a bust, Omar Marmoush is struggling to make an attacking impact, and while both Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke have been impressive, even then something is still missing. And the less said about Mykhaylo Mudryk, the better.
Overall, though, despite Tottenham being winless in five Premier League matches to start the 2026/27 season, there are real improvements under Roberto De Zerbi. And the player who perhaps typifies the improvements that could be ahead once Spurs luck equalizes is Savio.
The former Manchester City winger was an in demand transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur for more than a year, but Spurs were unable to sign the Brazilian international due to Man City's exorbitant demands. Despite a pretty poor track record of the final ball at the Etihad, Tottenham acquiesced to spending 85 million pounds on the versatile playmaking winger, with Roberto De Zebri just as high on the former Girona stud as Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange were.
Savio has been as advertised by the numbers
Savio has not done any goal scoring or even assisting in the Premier League, but he did both on his debut against EFL Championship side Charlton Athletic in the Lilywhites's League Cup opener. And when looking beyond the goals and assists, the all around production as a dribbler and creator has been elite, which is exactly what Spurs signed him for.
According to Tottenham Muse, Savio is averaging more than four dribbles completed and three chances created per 90 minutes, and there is only one other player in Europe's top five leagues who is putting up those kinds of numbers. And that would be one of the perennial Ballon d'Or favorites and the arguable best player on the planet, Barcelona right winger Lamine Yamal.
That is rarified air to be in, and while nobody would try to dare argue that Savio is as good of a player as Yamal, it is worth noting that the last time he was starting ever week when he was at Girona in the 2023/24 season, he was literally a La Liga Player of the Season candidate.
That Savio is sitting at the same table as Lamine Yamal in the chance creation and dribbling realms is both a huge feather in his cap and an indictment on Tottenham for not converting goals or winning games when they have this sort of game changing winger - exactly the player they had envisioned signing - within their ranks.
