Ruud Gullit criticises Sam van Royen’s conduct and takes him on directly: ‘And just keep going…’

Ruud Gullit completely disagrees with the approach taken by colleague Sam van Royen during an interview with Ruben van Bommel. The former international made that clear after PSV - Shakhtar Donetsk (1-1) on Ziggo Sport.

With Van Bommel in front of the camera, Van Royen understandably asked the forward about his foul on Aaron Bouwman last Saturday against Ajax. Gullit, though, felt the presenter kept pushing the point for too long.

"Jesus, come on," Gullit says, launching into a full rant straight after the interview. "Just keep banging on and on... Leave the lad alone! He has apologised, that’s what he’s saying too."

What particularly frustrates Gullit is Van Royen’s persistence. "Is it over now? And still carrying on... Sam, you’ve disappointed me."

He then adds a small caveat, though he does not shift from his stance. "No, I get it, you’ve done your job. But leave him alone now. Come on."

Hélène Hendriks then jumps to Van Royen’s defence and says she does find the subject ‘relevant’. "Relevant? Come on," Gullit says. "Did you call your mother, did you this... What exactly do you want to know?"

For Gullit, Van Bommel is genuinely sorry for what he did. "He really felt awful about it," he says of the PSV forward. "He showed that, so that’s it. Done."
