Raul Asencio breaks silence in wake of legal controversies – “I have been absolved”
The last few days have seen mixed fortunes (from a legal standpoint) for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio. The 23-year-old was convicted of drink driving earlier in the week, but the complaint against him – which related to the alleged dissemination of intimate content involving a minor – was withdrawn on Thursday.
On the back of these two cases, Asencio has taken to social media to break his silence. As per Diario AS, he expressed a sense of vindication at no longer being under investigation in the dissemination case, while he took the opportunity to thank Real Madrid for their support.
“Today, after a long time of silence and respecting a judicial process in which I always trusted, I can say that I have been ABSOLVED. And I think the time has come to share a few words.
“During these months I have lived through a difficult situation, and on occasion, I have had to see how information and opinions about me were published before the justice system pronounced. I understand and respect the work of the media when it comes to informing and giving opinions, but I also think it is important to remember that behind every piece of news there is a person and a family who live the consequences of everything that is published.
“I have always trusted that Justice would end up putting things in their place. Today there is a judicial resolution that speaks for itself, and I receive it with tranquillity and with the satisfaction of being able to close a stage that has been very important for me.
“I don’t want to stay with the noise or the difficult moments. I prefer to stay with the support of the people who were by my side and who trusted me during all this time. I want to deeply thank my family, my friends, my agent, my lawyers and all the people who accompanied me and gave me strength when I needed it most.
“I also want to thank Real Madrid and all the people at the club who have shown me their trust and have allowed me to continue working, growing and enjoying what I like the most: playing football. Throughout this process I have tried to stay out of it, work and move forward. Today I can do it with the peace of mind of knowing that I always trusted the truth.
“To those who spoke about me during these months, I only ask that, now that Justice has pronounced, this part of the story can also be told with the same attention. I don’t want to get into controversies or look back. I want to close this stage with respect, with my head held high and eager to move forward.
“I also want to refer to an episode related to a breathalyzer. I am deeply sorry for what happened and I fully assume my responsibility. It has been an experience from which I have learned, and I am very clear that it will not happen again. Now I want to look forward, keep working, keep growing and focus on what I like the most: playing football.
“Now it’s my turn to speak. And I absolutely agree with my coach: not only on the pitch, but off it. Hala Madrid. Let no one have the slightest doubt.”
Case had been ongoing for three years
The dissemination case, which also involved three former Real Madrid players in Ferrán Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez and Andrés García, was first brought to attention three years ago. It makes sense that Asencio is relieved to see the back of it, as he turns his full attention back to on-field matters.
