Rangers winger Ross McCausland emerges as transfer target for four clubs

Rangers winger Ross McCausland has attracted interest from four clubs as the Ibrox club considers his future before the transfer window closes.

STV's Raman Bhardwaj reports that Bursaspor, FC Thun, Maccabi Haifa and Sint-Truidense VV have all expressed an interest in the Northern Ireland international, although no bids have been made at this stage.

McCausland has made just one appearance for Rangers so far this season, coming off the bench to score in the 5-1 Premier Sports Cup victory over St Mirren at Ibrox.

The 23-year-old returned to Rangers this summer following an "underwhelming" season-long loan spell with Aris Limassol, where he made 25 appearances, scoring four goals and registering three assists.

His spell in Cyprus provided valuable senior experience, but Aris ultimately opted against pursuing a permanent deal.

McCausland subsequently returned to Ibrox and was given an opportunity to impress new head coach Derek McInnes, following the departure of Danny Rohl.

That fresh assessment has now coincided with growing interest from clubs across Europe and beyond.

McCausland's Rangers future

McCausland's position at Rangers has changed considerably over the past 12 months.

When he left Ibrox for Aris last summer, his first-team opportunities under Rohl were expected to be limited, with the German coach not viewing the winger as part of his long-term plans.

The expectation was that Rangers would look to secure a permanent transfer this summer.

However, Rohl's departure for RB Salzburg and the arrival of McInnes provided McCausland with another opportunity to prove himself.

He returned to first-team training during pre-season alongside several other players whose futures had been uncertain under the previous regime.

The winger's contract situation also means Rangers remain in a position to sanction a permanent departure, with McCausland having originally signed an extension in 2023 that was due to keep him at Ibrox until the summer of 2027.

At the time, McCausland made clear how strongly he felt about remaining at Rangers.

"I'm delighted to extend my stay. I've supported Rangers since I was a kid and it's a dream to play here," he said after agreeing his new contract.

Four clubs monitoring McCausland

There is now interest from four clubs in securing his services.

However, despite the growing list of potential destinations, Rangers have not received a formal bid for McCausland.

That leaves the situation open, with the Ibrox hierarchy able to assess any proposals that arrive before deciding whether a permanent departure represents the best outcome for the player and the club.

McCausland's recent appearance against St Mirren could also strengthen his case for consideration under McInnes, particularly as other regulars fail to impress, with Rangers exiting Europe on penalties to Jablonec on Thursday evening.

A decision still to be made

McInnes has already overseen significant changes to the Rangers squad since taking charge, with incomings and departures forming part of a wider rebuild at Ibrox, with 13 new arrivals so far.

McCausland is now one of the players whose future could be resolved before the window closes.

Whether that results in a permanent exit or another opportunity under McInnes remains to be seen.
