Promise of 30 minutes the spark of the clash: the full story of the Ronaldo and Jesus crisis
The Don was thinking about retiring from international football after the 2026 World Cup, but Jesus convinced him to continue
Portuguese journalist Nuno Luz has lifted the lid on the crisis between his country's captain Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Jorge Jesus, laying out exactly what happened in the emergency meeting held to resolve the dispute.
It all kicked off when Ronaldo spent the entire recent match against Norway on Portugal's substitutes' bench in the UEFA Nations League. Portugal won 2-1, but the Al-Nassr captain was furious.
Ronaldo then refused to train after the Norway match. He did hold a session with Jesus, and matters seemed to have calmed between the pair, until the manager used his pre-match press conference ahead of the Denmark game to insist that no player would change his ideas, nor anyone else in football. That prompted Don Cristiano to leave the Portugal camp and head for Madrid.
Nuno Luz told the "La Tribu" programme on Radio Marca: "The end of Cristiano's career with Portugal cannot be like this. What happened is not good. It leaves a bad impression."
As reported by "Marca", Luz said he had spoken to the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença: "He was very angry about this matter. And it cannot end like this, because Cristiano has a history. He is part of our history."
According to Luz, Cristiano had already been weighing up ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup. "After the World Cup, the idea of not returning to the national team was on Cristiano's mind, as he saw that as the end of the road," he said.
Jesus fought to keep him. "Jorge Jesus tried to convince him to stay, as the coach would call him at his home daily during the summer, assuring him that he was the person entrusted with leading this project," Luz added. "It even reached the point of holding a meeting with the player, where Jesus and the president of the Portuguese Federation visited him at his home in the city of 'Cascais' for coffee."
An agreement followed. "Finally, they reached an agreement: 'The matter was settled, as he wanted to play the first match against Wales, and the last match against Norway on home soil on Sunday,'" he continued.
Everything unravelled on the morning of the Norway match. According to Nuno, "Jesus called Cristiano in the morning" to tell him the plan had changed: "I have changed my mind, you can be an important element, and I will bring you on to play for 30 minutes." And therein lay the mistake.
Nuno reckons that promise should never have been made. "No coach in the world can promise a player 30 minutes of playing time if he does not include him in the starting line-up," he said. The game then dictated a change of plan, because "the match was not suitable for Cristiano, rather the moment required defending the 2-1 lead."
Cristiano's anger forced a meeting between all parties. Nuno explained that the Federation president had to travel urgently, and the three met afterwards.
Together they agreed, according to the Portuguese journalist: "Let us join the national team, for the national team is the most important thing and we will do things correctly."
Both men owned their part. "Jesus acknowledged his mistake, as he should not have declared that he would play for 30 minutes," Luz added. "For his part, Cristiano also accepted the fact that he needed to be with his team-mates, and together they reached an understanding."
Then it flared up again. Nuno explained that Cristiano had expected the coach to make some statement during the press conference, which never came: "Cristiano was listening to the press conference while he was already at the stadium, but Jesus did not say anything regarding that."
For Nuno Luz, Cristiano's story with Portugal cannot end this way. "The ending must be different, because he deserves a tribute and a farewell match," he affirmed.
Now the world waits on Cristiano's own account. Nuno believes he will stay quiet for now: "I do not think this is the right time to speak. I think he will speak once this round of national team matches is over. He has to speak, and he has stated that he will present his point of view on the matter."
