Portugal punish gigantic blunder by goalkeeper and record victory over Norway

Portugal beat Norway 1-2 in a hugely entertaining contest. The game was played at a ferocious pace, but Jorge Jesus' side came out on top. The win means Portugal have taken six points from their two Nations League matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench for Portugal. Head coach Jorge Jesus went with two strikers, handing the roles to Gonçalo Ramos and João Félix. The latter struck early to open the scoring.

Despite Norway enjoying more of the ball, Portugal struck first. Nuno Mendes burst down the left and slipped the ball to Pedro Neto, who picked out Félix. He beat goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland with a clever disguised finish: 0-1.

Norway then seized the initiative. Long spells of possession and slick combinations were supposed to bring Ståle Solbakken's side level quickly.

After the break, Erling Haaland finally got his goal. He had passed up several chances in the first half, but this time he was in the right place to turn in Patrick Berg's header after Ødegaard's free-kick: 1-1.

Minutes later, Portugal restored their lead. Goalkeeper Nyland played the ball straight to Ramos, who cleverly lifted it over the Norwegian keeper. Portugal were 1-2 up again in no time.

By the 58th minute, Nyland had made another mistake and Ramos again looked ready to cash in. A long ball from Diogo Costa was judged perfectly by the striker. The Norwegian was stranded in no man's land and missed the ball, allowing the AC Milan player to roll it into an empty net. The RB Leipzig goalkeeper ultimately got away with the blunder, as the goal was ruled out for offside.

That late Norwegian pressure did not bring another goal. The hosts still carved out a few chances, but Costa kept a clean sheet in the second half. Ronaldo stayed on the bench throughout and could not continue his pursuit of his 1,000th goal for the Portugal national team.
