On video: Belgium stun Italy with a brace and ignite the battle for top spot with France

Belgium got their UEFA Nations League campaign up and running with a deserved 2-0 win over Italy, banking their first three points of the competition.

Mika Godts stole the show. The Paris Saint-Germain forward opened his international account and dragged the Red Devils past a stubborn Azzurri side.

His opener arrived on 20 minutes, and it was a beauty. Godts collected the ball on the left, cut inside, danced past two Italian defenders and calmly slotted home to put Belgium in front.

Substitute Dodi Lukebakio wrapped it up in the 69th minute. He pounced on a precise, decisive pass from Charles De Ketelaere to kill off any hope of an Italian comeback.

The result lit up the race for top spot early. Belgium sit level with France on three points apiece, while Italy and Turkey prop up the table without a point between them.
