Rout after rout: Barca open their European campaign with a dazzling win

Barcelona sent an early warning to the giants of the old continent, sweeping aside Dutch visitors Feyenoord 5-1 on Wednesday evening at the Spotify Camp Nou in the first round of the Champions League league phase.

Hansi Flick's side hit five goals for the fourth time in five matches across all competitions this season. Feyenoord joined a list of victims that already featured Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Valencia.

The Catalans claimed their first three points in a match played under heavy rain, kicking off their bid to reclaim a continental title missing from their cabinet since 2015.

That result made it 19 wins in 21 home matches at the start of Barcelona's Champions League campaigns, against one draw and one defeat, according to Opta.

Egypt's Hamza Abdelkarim stayed on the bench, and the young striker's first Champions League appearance will have to wait, though he has already made his debut in La Liga.

New arrival Gabriel Jesus, by contrast, came off the bench in the second half.

Catalan dominance

Barcelona took charge from the opening whistle. Raphinha needed just three minutes to open the scoring, latching onto a pass from Lamine Yamal, teasing the Dutch defenders before firing home with ease.

The hosts kept coming. Karim Adeyemi doubled the lead in the 22nd minute with a surprise strike from outside the box that deceived the Feyenoord goalkeeper.

João Cancelo went close to a third in the 37th minute, but his shot cannoned off the right post, leaving the score unchanged at the break.

Jesus makes his mark

Nothing changed after the restart. The hosts kept the pressure on, and a third goal felt inevitable. It arrived in the 58th minute through Raphinha, after a superb through ball from Pedri.

Nacho Ferri thought he had pulled one back a minute later with a swift response, only for the referee to rule it out for offside.

Yamal made it four in the 78th minute, whipping a free-kick through the wall from the edge of the area.

Eight minutes from time, Sem Steijn grabbed a consolation after a fine cross from Gonçalo Borges.

Jesus, though, refused to let the game end without a mark of his own. The new arrival made it five with a well-taken header, converting a cross from Yamal.
