Neil gives updates on latest Millwall blows as injury crisis worsens
Alex Neil says Millwall will investigate their mounting injury problems after an already depleted squad suffered further setbacks in Tuesday night’s 3-0 defeat to Wrexham.
Kyrell Lisbie and Tairyk Arconte were added to the injury list ahead of the defeat and Millwall’s injury problems worsening during the game as Casper De Norre and Josh Coburn were both forced off.
“We’re concerned by it, yeah,” Neil told Southwark News.
“We certainly need to have a look internally at what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, because there’s obviously an issue there somewhere, and we need to try and get to the bottom of it because it’s hampering us when it comes to the games.
“It’s not giving us the best chances of showing what we’re all about and being effective.”
Neil also revealed that he had been reluctant to use several players against Wrexham because they were not fully fit.
Zak Lovelace started despite the Millwall boss believing he was not ready to do so, while Camiel Neghli had not trained in the days leading up to the game.
“I didn’t think that Zak Lovelace would’ve been ready to start,” Neil said. “I think that was proven as the game wore on. He probably should’ve come off the pitch.
“Camiel wasn’t ready. He hadn’t trained for the last couple of days. I didn’t really want to put him on the bench, but I didn’t have anybody left.”
Neil felt the game was relatively evenly balanced before further injuries disrupted his side during the second half.
“I thought the game was relatively in the balance again, and then I thought it changed when we lost Casper,” he said.
“Casper was landing on a lot of things. He was very influential in the game.
“As the game developed, Josh Coburn struggled with his ankle or his heel. The two lads in the middle started to cramp, so that was a worry, especially with Dan Kelly’s history.
“Then once the second goal went in, it became a tough night for us.”
