Mike Penders Left Behind as Belgium Fly to Italy

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders is set to miss Belgium’s game against Italy on Friday after reportedly suffering a quadriceps injury in training.

Reports out of Belgium say Penders and Leandro Trossard were left behind at the national team’s training centre in Tubize while the rest of the squad flew out to Rome for Friday’s game. Penders is said to be dealing with a quadriceps injury picked up in training, though the extent of it is not yet known.

There’s no official confirmation from either Chelsea or the Belgian federation on the diagnosis, and no timetable has been given for a return. The fact that Penders has stayed on international duty rather than being sent back to Chelsea is a hopeful sign that this isn’t serious, but that’s inference rather than confirmation at this stage.

What this means for Penders and Chelsea’s goalkeeping picture

The timing stings. With Thibaut Courtois not part of the current Belgium squad through injury, Penders could have been in line for his senior international debut this window. He was part of Belgium’s World Cup squad in the summer but didn’t play a single minute, so a first cap here would have mattered.

At Chelsea, Penders has started both of the club’s League Cup matches so far this season and has done enough to keep pressure on starter Emiliano Martínez. That progress, and his emergence as one of the more promising young stoppers at the club, briefly touched on in our wider look at Chelsea’s young talents this season, is now on pause while he recovers.

Should Penders be sidelined for any length of time, either Gaga Slonina or Teddy Sharman-Lowe would need to step into the backup goalkeeper role behind Martínez, adding another layer to a goalkeeper situation that already has plenty of moving parts.

For now, the severity of the injury simply isn’t clear, and neither Chelsea nor the Belgian FA have put a recovery timetable on it. The next real update will likely come from Belgium’s camp or from Cobham once he’s assessed further.
