Mbappé scores the winner, then collapses to the ground and has to go off injured

France won their first match under Zinedine Zidane on Friday night, beating Turkey 0-1 away from home. But the result came with a concern: Kylian Mbappé went off injured.

Zidane took charge of the France national team for the first time after replacing Didier Deschamps following the last World Cup.

He started Mike Maignan in goal. Jules Koundé, Dayot Upamecano, Maxence Lacroix and Adrien Truffert made up the back four. Adrien Rabiot, Manu Koné and Rayan Cherki lined up in midfield. Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise led the attack.

France first threatened after 17 minutes in a flat first half. Mbappé cut in from the left and curled just wide of the post. Turkey responded soon after when Fedri Kadioglu got his head to the ball, but the effort was comfortably gathered.

Although Cherki and Olise both went close before the break, Turkey looked more likely to score after half-time. Ismail Yüksek nearly headed home from a corner.

Then Mbappé broke the deadlock for France. Olise sent the Real Madrid forward through after a sloppy passage of play from Turkey, and he fired into the near corner past goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir.

Yet the goal came at a cost. Mbappé picked up an apparent knee injury as he took the shot. He tried to continue but eventually had to come off.

During the final quarter, France kept pressing for another goal. Koundé dragged an effort ten centimetres wide and Olise missed the target too. Deep into stoppage time, Turkey were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Çakir handled Bradley Barcola's shot outside the penalty area and was sent off.
