Martin O’Neill couldn’t resist Kasper Schmeichel dig after Celtic’s LASK victory
Martin O’Neill could not resist taking a brilliant swipe at former Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel after Wednesday night’s Champions League victory over LASK.
The Hoops put one foot in the league phase with an impressive 3-0 victory at Celtic Park in the first leg of their play-off tie.
Schmeichel, who made 20 appearances under O’Neill last season before a shoulder injury eventually forced him to retire, was back at Celtic Park in his new role as a TNT Sports pundit.
And the pair shared an amusing exchange at the end of O’Neill’s post-match interview.
As the interview was wrapped up on TNT Sports, Schmeichel asked his ex-boss: “Now that you don’t have the game at the weekend, are you giving them the day off?”
O’Neill replied: “We’re in tomorrow morning, but then they have the day off the next day.”
He then turned around to host Matt Smith and added: “When Kasper was here, he chose his days off!
“He was never here!”
The comment drew laughs before O’Neill and his former goalkeeper shook hands, with Schmeichel saying: “Well done, boss.”
