Man United make January window decision as Carrick rebuild enters next phase
Manchester United are expected to focus heavily on defensive reinforcements in January, with the club viewing the back line as the next major stage of their rebuild.
United spent recent windows reshaping the attack and midfield, but a difficult start to the season has exposed familiar defensive weaknesses.
Michael Carrick’s position remains under scrutiny, although Football Insider reported that INEOS are still inclined to give him more time rather than make another immediate managerial change.
Man United plan to prioritise defensive signings
According to Football Insider, United’s recruitment team are expected to target defenders before any other position when the January window opens.
Pete O’Rourke explained that another striker is not currently the main concern.
“For United right now, a new striker is not a top priority. (The priority is) probably rebuilding the defence, as obviously they have done the forward line and midfield in the last two summers.
“Going forward, United are looking to improve and restructure that defence, which will be the next stage of their process of rebuilding the squad.”
The need is understandable. United’s confirmed Premier League squad currently includes Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot among the senior defensive options, with younger players such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven also available. But the core of the defence remains familiar. Sky Sports noted before the season that United could begin 2026/27 with the same Shaw-Maguire-Martínez-Dalot back four used on the opening weekend of 2022/23, highlighting how little permanent change there has been in that area.
Defence is the next logical step
United’s priorities make sense.
The attack has been heavily refreshed with Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford among Carrick’s options, while Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have strengthened midfield. The defence now stands out as the least transformed area of the squad.
Left-back looks particularly important, but another centre-back could also be needed depending on the futures of Shaw, Maguire and other senior defenders.
Carrick’s own future adds uncertainty, yet recruitment planning should not stop because of managerial pressure. If United believe the squad needs faster, younger and more durable defenders, that requirement will remain regardless of who is in the dugout.
January may therefore be less about another glamorous attacking signing and more about finally fixing the structure behind them.
