Manchester City are now planning a formal approach for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, with a move still considered possible this summer even though the firm deadline set by the Blues has now passed, TEAMtalk understands.

Fernandez remains keen on the transfer and the chance to work once again under his former manager Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea are expected to demand more than £120million for the Argentina international, yet City sources believe a deal can still be completed before the window closes.

Sources say it is understood within Stamford Bridge that Fernandez’s desire to join City is well known.

Despite City having already agreed a deal for young midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, the sale of Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle United will create both squad space and greater financial flexibility to pursue the high-profile target.

Maresca is said to be particularly enthusiastic about bringing Fernandez into his squad and has been pushing hard for the signing.

The manager’s strong personal advocacy, combined with the player’s clear willingness, has encouraged City’s hierarchy to prepare an approach in the coming days.

Man City ready to launch new Enzo Fernandez move

Although the substantial valuation and the advanced stage of the transfer window present significant obstacles, the latest indications suggest both parties remain open to further discussions.

Fernandez’s technical quality, tactical intelligence and proven Premier League experience continue to make him an attractive option as City look to refine their midfield options.

As TEAMtalk previously reported, City have held belief that a deal could be struck for Fernandez.

Chelsea had previously set a deadline of Friday August 14 for clubs to bid £120million for Fernandez, but ultimately no such offer arrived from City.

However, that hasn’t deterred the Cityzens and there is hope from Fernandez that the clubs will be able to carve out a deal.

Whether the two clubs can bridge the gap on fee remains to be seen, but the combination of player ambition, managerial support and recent squad adjustments has kept the possibility very much alive as the summer market enters its decisive final phase.

Should a deal for Fernandez fail, sources have indicated that Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton remains on City’s radar as a potential alternative.
