Enzo Fernández has sparked fresh controversy at Chelsea, at a time when the club is going through a decisive phase regarding the future of the Argentine midfielder, whose name has featured prominently in the transfer market over the past weeks.

Pressure on Fernández has ratcheted up after the latest twists in his future, and Chelsea fans are no longer united behind him. The scene lays bare just how much tension has followed the player since the end of last season.

Real Madrid had entered the race for his signature before ruling out a move, leaving Fernández linked with a Chelsea exit.

Manchester City then emerged as the most prominent suitor, especially once Chelsea set a final deadline for offers on the player, valued at £120 million. The deadline came and went on Friday evening without a bid from City. Chelsea now expect Fernández to stay for the 2026-2027 season, while leaving the door open for the Sky Blues to move later.

Fernández came off the bench in Saturday's friendly against Real Sociedad, only to be met with jeers from a section of the Chelsea support. He had already been whistled when his name was read out before kick-off, according to the Telegraph newspaper.

The reception was not entirely hostile. Some supporters chanted the player's name, especially after he took the captain's armband from Reece James.

Much of the anger traces back to Fernández's previous hints about a move to Real Madrid, alongside other flashpoints that stirred controversy. He celebrated Argentina's goal against England in the World Cup semi-final before being sent off in the final his side lost to Spain.

Chelsea had wrapped up their pre-season with a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad. New signing Morgan Rogers opened the scoring, and João Pedro grabbed the other two.
