Liam Scales makes Ireland return after sitting out Israel clash
Liam Scales started for Ireland this evening after sitting out the previous game against Israel. The 28-year-old was an unused sub after it was reported that he had made his feelings clear about the fixture and supported goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who left the camp for the game in Hungary.
Scales returned to the starting XI for Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Austria in Dublin, underscoring the suggestion that he has made his views clear about facing Israel. Scalesy started as left centre back in a back three but was subbed off after the hour mark alongside Adam Idah.
Ireland were 2-0 up when Scales and Idah were substituted but, as the old adage goes, 2-0 is a tricky scoreline and the Austrians fought back to earn an unlikely draw.
It will be telling to see whether or not Scales is involved for Sunday’s return leg against Israel, which will be played in Serbia.
The Irish players were in the middle of a storm that should’ve been dealt with by their governing body. Scales and others appeared to show solidarity despite being subjected to taunts from Israel supporters, who managed to get into the ground. Notably, it is alleged that ex-Celt Idah was racially abused but no action has been taken given that the correct procedures were not followed.
Scales has made 163 appearances for Celtic, scoring 9 goals and assisting on 12 occasions. The County Wicklow-born defender has been a solid figure for Celtic since arriving back from a loan at Aberdeen. Brendan Rodgers really took Scales’ game on and he has become an accomplished first team option. For his faults, he always continues to work hard and show for the ball.
