Leon Goretzka is joining Aston Villa, Matteo Moretto and Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday afternoon. The German midfielder was a free agent after leaving Bayern Munich and will continue his career in the Premier League.

On Friday, it emerged that Goretzka would hold talks with the Villans. Now his arrival in Birmingham looks imminent.

Goretzka has reached a verbal agreement with the English club. Aston Villa want to schedule his medical and the signing of his contract for next week. According to Romano, the documents are already ready in any case.

After Youri Tielemans' departure to Manchester United, Villa had been urgently searching for another central midfielder. They now appear to have found one in Goretzka.

Before that, manager Unai Emery had already welcomed João Gomes to Birmingham. The Portuguese player arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Goretzka left Bayern Munich this summer after eight successful years. His role had become increasingly marginal in recent years and that ultimately led to his departure from the Allianz Arena. Interest in the German was strong this summer. Among the clubs mentioned were Atlético Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Internazionale and Arsenal.

One reason he remained without a club for so long is said to have been his considerable financial demands. According to German media, Goretzka is demanding €7 million net per season and a signing bonus of €10 million.
